Pete's Log: www.esgeroth.org

Entry #1847, (Meta)
(posted when I was 42 years old.)

So a few days ago I deleted my Facebook account (along with a twitter account and an instagram account). So now I've been feeling like I need to get my web presence back up to snuff.

Over the course of the last few evenings, after JB has fallen asleep, I've been working on it. First, in order to defeat some dependency paralysis, I deleted everything having to do with Kohana, a php mvc framework I tried making use of maybe a decade or so ago, and which has since just cluttered and obstructed things. Back to simple php and getting things done.

Next, I made a color scheme and a header and borrowed a bit from my grossdalebrewing.com css, since I had gone through the effort of making that mobile. I'm particularly amused by my approach to make the "terminal session" on the front page behave nicely on small screens.

Then I updated the Pete's Log header to use the same header/css/navigation as the main page. Then I started making things live again. There's lots of content and still lots to do, but I'm starting to feel like I have a web presence beyond my log again. It's nice.

Also, in classic me fashion, I fell down a rabbit hole working on my web history. I haven't escaped it yet either, but here are a few observations I jotted down during the process:

  • The web really is rotting away. So many broken links.
  • Apparently I went through a lengthy phase where I thought it was cool to add a <Syntax_Error> tag to the end of all my html files. I've left these intact.
  • I found at least one page where I had a VBScript block consisting solely of self.close(). Apparently I thought this was a way to stick it to IE users?
  • This page I made for convenience back in 1996 sure reminds me of another time:
Screenshot of form to submit searches to Yahoo, Lycos, AltaVista and Webcrawler
  • It's funny how often I came across promises that something or other was coming soon, e.g. this unfulfilled promise from 1995 or this ominous one from early 1998ish
