Pete's Log: Garage Deconstruction

Entry #2320, (Homeownership)
(posted when I was 44 years old.)

Today I continued the ongoing garage cleaning project. In particular I got some builtin shelves removed that we didn't like. They were inconveniently shaped and formed a corner space that was difficult to clean and probably a good spot for rodents to make a home.

What was intriguing to me is that some of the corner plywood shelf pieces had been cut to match the shape of the studs standing out from both walls that formed the corner. So you couldn't slide it in either direction because studs from one wall or the other would block it. You couldn't go up or down because the studs were connected to the slab at the bottom and crossbeams at the top. Couldn't tilt it either. Only thing I can figure is it was put in place before the garage structure was finished, but it felt like it was added later. It's a mystery.

A dry erase board drawing of a top view of the shelf. It is a rectangle, but the top and right sides each have two cut outs to accommodate studs

I wound up removing the shelf destructively, which is why I can only offer the above not-to-scale top-view drawing for reference.
