Pete's Log: I'm more democratic than you 2

Entry #1563, (Politics)
(posted when I was 29 years old.)

Having dual citizenship certainly has its perks. Voting in two countries was obvious, but as it turns out, I get to vote in three.

That's right. Due to an EU regulation I just recently became aware of, EU citizens resident in other EU countries are allowed to vote in local elections. So I will be participating in Munich's upcoming municipal elections.

So today is Super Tuesday. The Democratic National Committee decided this time around to allot 22 delegates to Democrats living abroad. The Democrats Abroad primary was today. They offer options to vote by mail, fax, email, and such. But in select cities they also have polling stations. Munich is one such select city.

I had a hard time motivating myself to go. Neither candidate really excites me enough to trek across town for a primary vote. I do have a slight preference for one over the other, though. Bonus points if you can guess which. In the end, though, I realized that I really appreciate the effort by the Democratic Party to allow me to vote in Munich. And I want to encourage this effort so it continues in the future.

And that's why I voted in the 2008 Democratic primary.

When I got home, my voter eligibility notice from the local voting authority was in my mailbox.

Yay democracy!

(Is it wrong for me to hope for early elections in Belgium, just so I can vote in three countries in the same year?)
