Pete's Log: Kühtai

Entry #1755, (Travel)
(posted when I was 34 years old.)

Last weekend (Jan 18-20), I went on a skiing trip to Kühtai in Austria with work. It was a blast. We had perfect weather and awesome snow.

Five of us left Friday morning around 7 am and after picking up equipment were on the slopes by 10:30. It had snowed the past few days, but by the time we were on the mountain, the skies were blue. I spent most of the day skiing with my one colleague who is a better skier than me and his girlfriend. We did mostly "off-piste" skiing, a.k.a. ungroomed areas to the side of the groomed runs, with a lunch break at a hut. During lunch, another colleague and his wife joined us. We stopped at 4, by which point I was exhausted, but happy.

We then had to get to our hut, which involved a five minute drive, followed by a 20 minute hike in the snow. At least there was a cargo lift for our gear. We stayed at the Hemerwaldalm. Four more colleagues were already there, since they had opted not to ski on Friday. At the hut, a delicious Gulasch-dinner was made (my contribution was cutting a few vegetables), followed by an attempt to teach me Schafkopf. I was in bed by 11.

Saturday we woke up to a somewhat overcast sky, but by the time we were on the slopes, the weather was again perfect. I spent the day with a somewhat slower group, in order to conserve some strength for Sunday. It was another great day of skiing. The evening at the hut was a bit more subdued, since all of us were tired from the skiing.

Sunday we had beautiful weather again. The weather couldn't have worked out better. Friday was nice, but the forecast said Saturday and Sunday wouldn't be. Saturday was nice, but the forecast said Sunday wouldn't be. And then Sunday was nice. So every day I was inclined to make the most of, since it was going to be the last good day of skiing.

We left the mountain at 4, and after the usual Sunday evening Austria-to-Munich traffic jam, I was home by 8 or so. It was the most fun I'd had skiing in a long time, and now I feel inspired to try to do some more skiing soon.
