Pete's Log: Venturing into the city

Entry #1861, (Life in General)
(posted when I was 42 years old.)

Jamie and I both had appointments downtown today. We didn't coordinate them (read: I didn't check our shared calendar carefully when scheduling mine), but so it happened. Since we only have one car and don't feel ready for Metra yet, we made a little day out of it.

Jamie's appointment was in the morning, so she dropped me off at my office. This seemed both a more efficient and safer way to work than a random coffee shop. It was only the second time I've been there since lockdown started in March. This time I saw a few more people (I think five total) than last time (nobody), but it was still pretty eerie. Hallway lights were off for the most part.

We met up again for lunch which we grabbed at The Bandit in the Fulton Market area, near where my dentist appointment would be. They had nicely spaced out outdoor seating and the food was delicious.

My appointment was over quickly, so we grabbed to-go coffees at a nearby coffee shop and drove home.

Observations:

  • Chicago is definitely getting busier
  • Traffic is not back to normal levels, but definitely heavier than my last trip in
  • People seem to be good about wearing masks
  • I like my home office setup better than my setup in the office. I think mostly because I like my chair here better, and I never switched out the keyboard/mouse they gave me on day 1 for something I like better, whereas I really like my home keyboard and mouse. I bought a KVM for home use long before I knew I'd be working from home for an extended period of time, so I can use my setup for both esgerbeastie and work. It's pretty nice actually.

Some meta: this entry will make 2020 my most prolific year since 2011. Out of curiosity, I looked up how many days are left in the year and the answer is exactly 100. 100 day challenge? Maybe! 100 more entries would leave me just shy of my 2007 output, but there's definitely potential for making this my sixth-best year of all time. Let's see how it goes!
