Pete's Log: Hashtag Chickenlife

Entry #2129, (Chickens)
(posted when I was 43 years old.)

Chicken life continues to be fun. We are getting to know their personalities and they seem to enjoy our yard a lot. Figured they should get some more detailed introductions.

Anna

Anna the Chicken

Anna is an ISA brown and is the most confident and curious. She will often leave the other two and come hang out by us. On a few occasions she has discovered her reflection in our storm door and started pecking at herself. She might be my favorite. Anna lays brown eggs daily (so far).

Elsa

Elsa the Chicken

Elsa is also an ISA brown. She is the only one of our chickens that seems to consistently do an "egg song". When she's in the nest box laying, it's usually accompanied by loud clucking. Elsa lays brown eggs daily (so far).

Olaf

Olaf the Chicken

Olaf is an Ameraucana. She is a bit skittish and is the only chicken I have yet to catch. Luckily, she always wants to be with other chickens, so if I get Anna and Elsa back in the run, Olaf will follow on her own. I'm pretty sure Olaf is JB's favorite. Olaf lays blue/green eggs about two out of three days.

Their favorite snacks seem to be corn, watermelon, blueberries and mealworms. We continue to do lots of chicken reading and have been buying more accessories for the coop. Jamie also found that the Brookfield ordinance on chickens states three hens per lot. And our house is on two lots. So it seems maybe we could add a few more hens. But we probably won't. At least not yet...

In that last picture Anna is on the left and Elsa is on the right. Elsa's tail feathers are much lighter than Anna's, which is how those two names got assigned and how we tell them apart.
